# Create a navigation item

## Description

Create or add a tenant-configurable navigation item in main, client-details, or client-portal navigation (for example a new link, group, or divider).
Supports the same custom item families as the live Navigation settings UI:
- group
- view
- modal
- url
- headline
- divider

Do not use this to create system navigation items. System items are seeded/locked and should be hidden or edited instead.

    - `context` (`string`, required) — Which configurable navigation context to manage.
    - `department_id` (`string`) — Required when visibility_level is department.
    - `description` (`string`) — Optional subtitle/description shown under the navigation label.
    - `display_order` (`number`) — Optional zero-based position within the target parent group.
    - `icon` (`string`) — Optional Iconify icon name. Views and modals can auto-fill this from the selected asset.
    - `is_collapsed_default` (`boolean`) — Group items only. Only applies when is_collapsible is true.
    - `is_collapsible` (`boolean`) — Group items only. Matches the Collapsible Group setting in the UI.
    - `item_type` (`string`, required) — Type of custom navigation item to create.
    - `label` (`string`) — Display label. Optional for dividers. Views and modals can auto-fill this from the selected asset.
    - `modal_id` (`string`) — Required for item_type=modal.
    - `open_in_new_tab` (`boolean`) — URL items only. Defaults to true.
    - `parent_id` (`string`) — Optional parent group id. Omit for a root-level item.
    - `parent_label` (`string`) — Alternative to parent_id. Exact parent group label in the same context.
    - `url` (`string`) — Required for item_type=url. Client-details URLs may include shortcodes like {client.id}.
    - `view_id` (`string`) — Required for item_type=view.
    - `visibility_level` (`string`) — Main/client-details only. Portal navigation does not expose visibility controls.
